About NYC Varsity League

The mission is – to serve the children of New York City and the Greater Metropolitan Area through baseball while promoting an attitude of professionalism and fair play.

About NYC Varsity League

The NYC Varsity fall baseball league is aiming to build the brand of New York City baseball.

The league, now bolstered by a sponsorship from Major League baseball, just completed its second season under the direction of Gary Perone, the director of new business for the Brooklyn Cyclones and an assistant scout for the New York Mets.

His plan is to provide New York City players with the opportunity to get top-level instruction to help their development. Former major leaguers and Brooklyn natives John Franco of the Mets, Frank Rodriguez of the Red Sox and Twins, and former Astros and Mariners pitcher John Halama will be working with the teams during the season. Major league scouts were also at the workout evaluating talent and will be around during the fall.    “They are going to give the best experiences and the best development to the kids,” Perone said “If we provide them with the best venues then it’s going to be worthwhile for a kid to be part of the program.”   New Utrecht star pitcher Andrew Nathan agreed.     Gary Perone would love to attract more of the city’s top players, but his focus is more than that. He wants to build a league to provide city players with a chance to grow as players and further improve the level of baseball in the five boroughs.

The league is most beneficial to Public School Athletic League players who do not have a fall season. The Catholic High School League does have a league in the fall and that could make it more difficult for parochial schools’ top players to participate, though some have in the past.  Perone said  “we need to continue to build our brand of baseball in New York.”  “If we don’t build our brand of baseball we will lose our brand of baseball in New York City.”

DHAA 7-8 Dodgers win League Championship with 2 one-run victories over the St A’s Rangers

Game One- Dodgers 4 Rangers 3

Game one was a pitchers duel as the Dodgers Jake Gutwirth held the Rangers to 2 hits over 3 innings while striking out 6 Rangers. The Rangers held a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 4th inning when Niko Geroulanos singled in the Dodgers first run. The Rangers took their 3-1 lead into the bottom of the 5th inning when the Dodgers staged a last inning rally. Andrew Hankash, Tommaso Cutrona and Marco Sanducci all reached base safely to start the inning. Jake Gutwirth forced a walked scoring Hankash to make the score 3-2 Rangers. Niko Geroulanos then hit a sharp ground ball that was fielded by the Rangers second baseman. Tommaso Cuttrona scored on the play, and as the Ranger first baseman held the ball, Marco Sanducci raced around 3rd base and scored the winning run, narrowly beating the throw home and giving the Dodgers a 4-3 victory and a 1-0 series lead!

Game two-Dodgers 8 Rangers 7

Game two again saw the Dodgers playing from behind as the Rangers built an early 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Dodgers staged another late inning rally. Anthony Cutrona led off with a double followed by back-to-back singles by John Mortillaro and Nick Stathoukos which trimmed the Rangers lead to 2-1. Matthew Fadelici and Andrew Hankash were the next Dodgers to reach base followed by back-to-back singles by Tommaso Cutrona and Marco Sanducci which added three additional runs and gave the Dodgers a 5-2 lead. The Rangers fought back to tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth when Dodger ace Jake Gutwirth re-entered the game with the bases loaded and one out with the game hanging in the balance. On an 0-2 pitch, the Rangers batter hit a line drive that was caught by Dodger 3B Marco Sanducci who then stepped on 3rd base for an improbable double play! In the top of the fifth, the Dodgers rallied once again. Niko Geroulanos led off with a single, and with one out the Dodgers got consecutive hits from Gino Sarta, John Mortillaro and Nick Stathoukos which generated three runs and gave the Dodgers an 8-5 lead going into the bottom of the last inning. The Rangers were able load the bases with nobody out, as the Dodgers turned to star closer Niko Geroulanos. Geroulanos came on and forced a come-backer for the first out but the Dodgers lead was trimmed to 8-6 on the play. Geroulanos got the Rangers clean-up hitter on a groundout to Dodger 3B Marco Sanducci for the second out, but a run scored on the play making the score 8-7. With two outs and the bases still loaded, Geroulanos then fell behind 3-1 on what was to be the last Rangers batter, as Geroulanos battled back and forced the strikeout to give the Dodgers the series clinching victory!
